       Increased reading comprehension for basic readers in a 5-week session (8th and 9th graders).

       Coached rising 10th graders through a formal debate and argument-writing unit.

       Taught college level expository writing and published anthology of polished essays.

       (Ongoing) Assist students on individual basis with school assignments—essays and interpreting literature.

 

 

2001 to Present   BAY AREA WRITING PROJECT, Berkeley, California

Teacher Consultant

       Facilitate "Teachers as Writers" workshops and BAWP's annual weekend writing retreat.

       Produce and co-host "The Organic Word" monthly reading series where teachers and students write together and then perform their work in a public venue (Mission Pie bakery/café in San Francisco).

Humanities Teacher

       Taught 9th and 10th grade World Literature, 11th grade American Literature, AP Language and Composition, and Summer Expository Writing.

       Researched, implemented, and trained department members in innovative teaching of writing techniques including how to adapt academic writing rubrics.

       Coached 9th grade English teachers in the use of drama techniques to increase reading comprehension and public presentation skills.

       Created the JCHS Writing Center, where students receive individual writing attention.

       Worked closely with parents and staff to ensure an equitable and differentiated classroom setting for students with learning disabilities.

       Tutored middle and high school students at all skill levels for essay assignments (brainstorming through final drafts), including Humanities classes, AP English, summer reading, and college application essays.

       Coached students through writing process (brainstorming through final draft) and improved self-confidence.

 

2001 to 2006      ARAGON HIGH SCHOOL, San Mateo, California

English Teacher and Peer Helping Coordinator/Teacher

       Taught 10th-11th grade College Prep English, 10-12th grade Peer Helping, and AP English Language and Composition.

       Recognized as departmental leader and curriculum innovator: created Lincoln-Douglas debate unit, which is now taught by all 11th grade English teachers.

       Transformed 11th grade Honors English into district and state-approved AP Language and Composition course.

       Established and coordinated a successful school-wide Peer Helping Program.

       Selected, interviewed, and trained students to counsel over 300 peers each semester, significantly improving the safety and well being of overall student population.

       Organized and led successful field trips to supplement curriculum, including a Huck Finn canoe trip on the Russian River and annual trips to the San Francisco International Film Festival.

       Helped rising 9th graders improve their expository writing by guiding them through multiple drafts of three different writing types (persuasive, evaluative, reflective).

       Increased student lexile level, reading comprehension, and interest in reading in rising 9th grade students reading at 2nd-5th grade reading levels.

       Achieved proficiency in teaching Phonographix and measuring reading and writing skills.
